Debt has become such a dirty word these days, and in many cases, there is good reason for that. Americans are saddled with unheard of amounts of debt and the problem is not just going to go away. In some cases, debt is absolutely necessary, while in others, it is beneficial. The key is knowing which kinds of debt to avoid, and which ones to focus on. Less than one in 20 credit cards offers cashback rewards today on card spending, while over a quarter of cards offered this six years ago, according to a study by data provider Defaqto.
Reward cards generally fall into four categories: Airmiles, cashback, points schemes and shopping rewards.
As cashback offers can be the most expensive of these four, David Black from Defaqto believes providers will begin to pare them back as the cost of the recession hits their balance sheets.
